Pinecone Active Learning offers a full K through 12 math tutoring program in San Jose. Individualized instruction from a tutor who works with your student for years, not one session at a time. Same tutor, same room, sequenced progress that meets your student where they actually are.
The program covers early numeracy through high school geometry. We teach the underlying reasoning, not just how to get the right answer on tonight’s worksheet. Students who work with us for a year or more typically stop dreading math and start seeing it as something they can actually do.
How the program is structured
The Pinecone math curriculum consists of a sequenced set of weekly booklets that carry students from earliest numeracy through pre-algebra, geometry, and optional advanced algebra. Students move through the sequence at their own pace, not by grade level. A 1st grader ready for fractions moves ahead. A 5th grader still shaky on times tables reviews them first. Pinecone is ability-based, not grade-based — that flexibility is what makes individualized instruction actually work.
What we cover, roughly by band:
- Earliest years (as young as age 3): Learning numbers 1-2-3 through 250. Next number, before number. Proper writing of numerals. Foundations that make later work possible.
- Early elementary (ages 5 to 8): Number sense. Counting. Addition, subtraction, and the meaning behind them.
- Elementary (3rd to 5th grade): Multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and word problems. The bridge from arithmetic to mathematical thinking.
- Middle school (6th to 8th): Pre-algebra. Ratios, percentages, integers, and the transition into algebraic thinking.
- Regular Math program endpoint: High school Geometry.
- Advanced Algebra program: A special extension for students who wish to continue beyond Geometry.
The tipping point in math
Vivian has written that watching a student "get it," crossing the threshold from confused to confident, is one of the most rewarding parts of her work. She calls it the tipping point, borrowed from Malcolm Gladwell: "that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire."
In math, that tipping point is usually the moment a student realizes they can actually learn something they thought was beyond them. Then something else. Then something else. Self-confidence kicks in, and progress compounds.
The key is providing "the right material at the right level and in the right amount." Vivian’s words. That is what our sequenced booklet approach makes possible. It removes the two things that stall students in math the most: work that is too hard (which produces frustration) and work that is too easy (which produces boredom).
How math sessions work
Students come to the center twice a week for one-on-one and small-group instruction. In between, they complete short daily practice at home. The practice is calibrated so it takes only a few minutes but happens every day. Consistent small doses beat occasional long sessions, in math especially.
Every session includes review of what the student has been working on, direct teaching of new concepts as they arise, and individual work with the instructor nearby to catch confusion before it hardens into a misconception.

Frequently asked questions
- What ages do you cover?
- We start with students as young as three; learning numbers from 1-2-3 to 250 (next number, before number) and proper writing of numbers. Our regular Math program continues on through high school Geometry. We also have a special Advanced Algebra program for those who wish to continue beyond Geometry. The program is sequenced so students move at their own pace, not by grade level.
- Do I need to be enrolled in writing to do math with Pinecone?
- No. Math is its own program. Some families come to us for math only, some do writing only, some do both. Whatever fits your student.
- How often does the math program meet?
- Twice-weekly in-person sessions plus short daily practice at home, same cadence as our writing program. Roughly three hours a week total. Consistent small doses beat occasional long sessions, especially in math.
- Do you help with math homework?
- We offer private sessions (at a separate cost) to help with school homework. Our Pinecone Math program itself teaches the skills your child needs to do their own homework, but standard sessions are not for finishing tonight’s assignment. Students who get their homework "done" without learning the underlying skill fall further behind. Our Math program covers all of the concepts, including word problems, your child will need to succeed and even exceed school requirements.
- Is this Common Core aligned?
- Yes. Our math curriculum aligns with California Common Core standards. That said, our sequenced approach means students often move through material at a pace that differs from their classroom.
- How is this different from Mathnasium or Kumon?
- Mathnasium is a workshop model where students rotate through worksheets. Kumon is worksheet-based, self-paced, and covers math and reading. Pinecone is instructor-led and individualized, with the same tutor building a real relationship with your student over years. If drill-and-practice at scale is what you want, Mathnasium or Kumon may fit. If you want an individualized, long-term math tutor, we’re a better fit.
- What if my student gets frustrated easily with math?
- This is where Pinecone’s approach shines. Most math frustration comes from being asked to work at a level that does not match where the student actually is. Our sequenced program meets them at the exact right challenge point, which is usually the difference between panic and progress.
- Do you offer online math sessions?
- Yes. One-on-one online sessions are available at an additional $20 per month above in-person tuition. Popular with families outside the immediate Evergreen area.
- Do you work with kids who have learning differences?
- Yes. Vivian has 30 years of experience with students on the autism spectrum, and with kids who have ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other learning differences. Individualized pacing is our core method, which suits students who need a different rhythm than a classroom can offer.
