The Silver Creek neighborhood, and how we serve it
Silver Creek sits just east of Evergreen, wrapping around the Silver Creek Country Club and stretching south toward Metcalf Road. It is one of the more academically competitive neighborhoods in San Jose, with families that care deeply about writing, college readiness, and the long arc of a student’s education.
Pinecone Active Learning is a 10 minute drive from most of Silver Creek. Our address is 2921 The Villages Parkway, right off Aborn Road, in the neighboring Evergreen area. From the Silver Creek Country Club, take Silver Creek Valley Road west, then Aborn Road, then left on The Villages Parkway.
Vivian founded Pinecone in 2008 and has been teaching Silver Creek families for the entire 17 years since. Our current families include kids at Silver Creek High, Chaboya Middle, and the elementary feeders in the Evergreen School District.
Why Silver Creek families choose Pinecone
Silver Creek is a college-prep neighborhood. The high school sends students to the UCs, the Ivies, and everything in between. That kind of trajectory depends on real writing ability, not just good grades in English class. Most schools do not teach writing as a discrete skill. We do.
Three things Silver Creek families tell us matter to them:
- Writing as a specialty, not a side program. Many tutoring options in the area are strong on standardized tests or general academics. Pinecone is a writing specialist. Our whole program is organized around teaching writing well.
- Continuity from elementary through college applications. We are the same instructor and same center working with your child from 3rd grade through their Common App essay. That continuity produces a level of individualized attention no chain center can match.
- Serious revision partnership on college essays. A finished Pinecone college essay usually goes through 6 to 10 drafts. That is not perfectionism, that is what a strong personal statement actually requires. See our essay writing tutor page for more.
What our Silver Creek students work on
The specific work depends on grade and goals, but here is what typically fills the Pinecone hours for Silver Creek families:
- Elementary: Sentence craft, paragraph structure, vocabulary, handwriting for the youngest students. Foundation work that pays off for years.
- Chaboya Middle: Multi-paragraph writing, argumentative essays, textual evidence, beginning revision habits. This is the age where good writers separate from struggling writers, and we can catch it before it becomes a pattern.
- Silver Creek High: Analytical essays for English classes, AP writing prep, SAT and ACT writing prep, college application essays. This is where our program earns its keep.
College essay work for Silver Creek High seniors
Silver Creek High sends a lot of students to competitive schools every year. The Common App essay, UC personal insight questions, and the various supplementals for target schools are their own genre of writing, and students who have not been taught essay structure often freeze when they sit down to write them.
Our approach starts the summer before senior year. First meetings are not writing. They are questions: what have you actually cared about, what have you been surprised by, what is the moment your parents would be surprised to know mattered to you. Only then do we start drafting. And then we revise, revise, revise.
One important thing: we do not ghostwrite. What comes out of the Pinecone program is the student’s actual writing, sharpened by revision. That matters for admissions officers who are trained to spot voice mismatches, and it matters for the student, who will need to write in college and beyond.

Frequently asked questions from Silver Creek families
- How far is Pinecone from Silver Creek?
- About 10 minutes by car from most parts of Silver Creek. Take Silver Creek Valley Road west to Aborn Road, then left on The Villages Parkway. From the Silver Creek Country Club area, plan on about 12 minutes.
- Which Silver Creek schools do most of your students come from?
- Chaboya Middle School and the elementary feeders in the Evergreen School District. We also have returning families with older students who come back for occasional private tutoring, but our advertised focus is ages 3 through 8th grade.
- Do you serve older Silver Creek students at all?
- Our advertised programs run through 8th grade. Occasional college application essay work is available through private tutoring for families who have been with Pinecone since elementary school, but we do not take new high school clients.
- How is Pinecone different from AJ Tutoring or other Silver Creek options?
- AJ Tutoring is strong on SAT and ACT prep and college counseling. Pinecone is a writing specialist with a long-term relationship model. Many families use both, with AJ for standardized test prep and Pinecone for actual writing instruction.
- Do you offer online sessions if I do not want to drive?
- Yes. One-on-one online sessions are available at an additional $20 per month above in-person tuition. Some Silver Creek families do a mix of in-person and online, especially during rainy months.
- Are you a good fit for a student who is already a strong writer?
- Yes. Strong writers benefit most from a serious revision partner. We often work with high-performing Silver Creek High students who want their essays to be better than they can make them on their own.
- How long do most Silver Creek families stay with Pinecone?
- The typical Silver Creek family we work with stays for 4 to 8 years. Some started with us as young as age 3 and have grown up through our writing, reading, grammar, and math programs. That long-term relationship is the whole point of our model.
- Do you do standardized test prep?
- Standardized test prep is not our advertised focus. The writing, reading, and math foundations we build with 8th-grade-and-under students prepare them well for high school testing later, but dedicated SAT/ACT prep is best handled by a specialist.
- Do you tutor kids at the Country Club schools or private schools?
- Yes. We have students at Silver Creek High, and also at various private schools around the area including Harker, Bellarmine, and Notre Dame. The writing skills we teach transfer across curricula.
