Children's Writing Tutor in Evergreen, San Jose

The Evergreen neighborhood, and where Pinecone fits

Evergreen is one of the biggest residential neighborhoods on the east side of San Jose, tucked between Aborn Road to the north and Yerba Buena Road to the south, with Silver Creek to the east and Highway 101 to the west. It is the neighborhood we know best because it is the neighborhood our storefront sits in.

Pinecone Active Learning is at 2921 The Villages Parkway, right off Aborn Road, inside the plaza that sits at the entrance to The Villages community. If you live near Silver Oak Elementary, Chaboya Middle School, Evergreen Valley High School, or shop at Evergreen Village Square, we are less than a 10 minute drive.

Vivian founded Pinecone here in 2008. The families we started with then still have kids and grandkids coming through our doors. That is what "based in Evergreen" actually looks like: 17 years of teaching the same schools, following the same curriculum changes, and knowing which teachers assign which essays.

Why Evergreen families choose Pinecone for writing

Evergreen is a competitive academic neighborhood. The high schools feed into UC and CSU campuses at high rates. Parents here care about writing because they know that college applications, AP exams, and eventually college coursework all rest on writing ability. And most schools in the area assume that ability rather than teach it.

Three things Evergreen families tell us they were looking for and found here:

  • A writing specialist rather than a general tutor. Many Evergreen tutoring options are strong on math (Mathnasium at Evergreen Village Square, Kumon on White Road, Best Brains) or general homework help. Fewer are writing-first. Pinecone is.
  • A long-term relationship, not a short-term boost. Most of our Evergreen families are with us for years. Kids who started here in 2nd grade are now writing college essays with us. We know how the student thinks, what they care about, and where their writing tends to trip.
  • Individualized pacing. Our program adjusts to where the student actually is, not where a national workbook says they should be. That flexibility matters especially for Evergreen kids who are ahead in one thing and behind in another, which is most kids.

What our Evergreen students work on

The specific work depends on the student, but by grade band, our Evergreen students typically focus on:

  • Elementary (Silver Oak, Cadwallader, Evergreen Elementary): Sentence craft, paragraph structure, vocabulary, handwriting for the youngest students.
  • Middle school (Chaboya Middle): Multi-paragraph writing, argumentative essays, beginning revision habits, mechanics.
  • High school (Evergreen Valley High, Silver Creek High): Analytical essays for English classes, AP writing prep, SAT and ACT writing, personal statements for juniors and seniors.

We often coordinate directly with what students are being asked to write at school. If a Chaboya English teacher assigns a narrative essay on a particular week, that is what we work on in session. Same for AP Lang rhetorical analysis at Evergreen Valley High.

Frequently asked questions from Evergreen families

How close is Pinecone to my house if I live in Evergreen?
From most parts of Evergreen, Pinecone is a 5 to 10 minute drive. Our address is 2921 The Villages Parkway, right off Aborn Road. Coming from Silver Oak Elementary, Chaboya Middle, or Evergreen Valley High, plan on 5 to 8 minutes.
Which Evergreen schools do most of your students come from?
Our current families have students at Silver Oak Elementary, Evergreen Elementary, Cadwallader Elementary, Chaboya Middle School, Evergreen Valley High School, and Silver Creek High School. If your child is at any of these schools, we probably already tutor other kids they know.
How is Pinecone different from Mathnasium at Evergreen Village Square?
Mathnasium is math-only and follows a national workshop model. Pinecone is writing-first and individualized. If math is your main need, Mathnasium may fit better. If writing is the priority, or if you want a long-term tutor who grows with your child, Pinecone is the better fit.
How is Pinecone different from Kumon Evergreen?
Kumon is worksheet-based, self-paced, and covers math and reading. Pinecone is instructor-led, individualized, and specializes in writing. Some families do both, using Kumon for math practice and Pinecone for writing instruction.
Do you tutor Evergreen students online, or only in person?
Both. Most Evergreen families do in-person sessions because the drive is short. Online sessions are available for families whose schedules make the drive impractical, at an additional $20 per month.
Do you help with writing assignments from Evergreen area schools specifically?
Yes. Our sessions can be built around your student’s actual assigned writing, whether that is a Chaboya narrative essay, an Evergreen Valley High analytical essay, or a Silver Creek High research paper. We know the local curriculum expectations well.
Is there enough parking at your location?
Yes. The Villages Parkway plaza has plenty of free parking directly in front of our unit. Drop-off and pickup are quick.
What ages do you take?
Our programs are designed for children ages 3 through 8th grade. Most families start in early elementary and stay with us for years. Occasional high school work is available through private tutoring for returning families.
Do you offer sibling discounts for Evergreen families with multiple kids at Pinecone?
Yes. We have a sibling discount that applies when more than one child from the same family is enrolled. Ask Vivian for the current rate.
What if my kid has ADHD or a learning difference?
Vivian has 30 years of experience with students on the autism spectrum, and with kids who have ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences. Individualized pacing is our core method.
