Where Pinecone began
Pinecone started on Aborn Road. In April 2008, Vivian Hobbs opened the doors of what she called Pinecone Active Learning at Club One inside the Silver Creek Sportsplex, just up the road from where we are now. She had spent 15 years running a much larger learning franchise with over 200 students, and Pinecone was her chance to build something more individualized.
17 years later, Pinecone is at 2921 The Villages Parkway, just off Aborn Road, still serving the same broader East San Jose community. If you drive Aborn between Highway 101 and Silver Creek Valley Road, you have driven past both Pinecone locations.
That history matters because it means we know this part of San Jose. The schools. The traffic. The routines of families who live and work here. That is the whole reason we call East San Jose one of our home areas.
What we mean by "East San Jose"
East San Jose is a big label. For Pinecone’s purposes, we mean the broader Aborn corridor and the neighborhoods on either side of it. That includes the areas around Cassell Elementary, Millbrook Elementary, the schools along Aborn Road, White Road, and King Road, and the residential streets in between. Some of our families come from further north (Alum Rock, Berryessa) and some from further south (Evergreen, Silver Creek), and we treat them all as part of our East San Jose community.

- Writing that isn’t worksheets. Many East San Jose tutoring options lean heavily on drill-and-practice models. Our writing program is instructor-led and individualized. That difference matters most for kids who have already tried a worksheet-based program and found it too rigid.
- Real long-term relationships. Some of our East San Jose families have been with us for a decade. Kids who started here in elementary school are now in high school, still coming twice a week. That kind of continuity is unusual and it produces real results.

Directions from around East San Jose
From the Aborn Road area near Silver Creek Sportsplex, take Aborn east about 2 miles to The Villages Parkway. Turn right. The plaza is on your right just inside the entrance.
From the Alum Rock or East Foothills area, take White Road or King Road south to Aborn Road, then east to The Villages Parkway. About 15 to 20 minutes.
From Highway 101, exit Capitol Expressway east, continue to Aborn Road, then east on Aborn to The Villages Parkway. About 15 minutes.
Parking is free and directly in front of the storefront.

- What counts as "East San Jose"?
- For our purposes, the broader Aborn corridor and everything east of Highway 101 between Alum Rock in the north and Silver Creek in the south. That includes the neighborhoods around Cassell Elementary, Millbrook Elementary, and the schools along Aborn Road, White Road, and King Road.
- How far is Pinecone from most of East San Jose?
- From most of the Aborn corridor, we are 5 to 15 minutes by car. Take Aborn Road east until you reach The Villages Parkway, then turn right. From Alum Rock or further north, plan on 15 to 20 minutes.
- I heard Pinecone used to be at Silver Creek Sportsplex. Is that true?
- Yes. Vivian founded Pinecone in April 2008 at Club One inside Silver Creek Sportsplex on Aborn Road. As the program grew, we moved to our current home at 2921 The Villages Parkway. Both locations are on the same road, just a couple miles apart.
- Which East San Jose schools do your students attend?
- Our current families span many East San Jose schools, including elementary schools in the Evergreen and Franklin-McKinley school districts, plus middle and high schools like Chaboya, Piedmont Hills, and Silver Creek. We adapt to whatever curriculum the school is using.
- Do you work with families from Alum Rock or the Berryessa area?
- Yes, though the drive from Alum Rock or Berryessa is closer to 20 minutes. Some families in those areas choose our online option for that reason. Both work.
- Is Pinecone appropriate for families where English is a second language?
- Yes. Many of our East San Jose families are bilingual households, and writing tutoring often complements the reading and English work students are doing at school. Vivian has 30 years of experience across a wide range of family backgrounds.
- Do you have flexible scheduling?
- Yes. Our regular hours are Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 PM. We work with families on scheduling within those hours based on when they can actually get their kid to us after school pickup.
- Do you offer online sessions for families further out?
- Yes. One-on-one online sessions are available at an additional $20 per month above in-person tuition. Popular with families in Alum Rock, Berryessa, and East Foothills where the drive gets longer.
