Primarily middle school students in 6th through 8th grade preparing for the writing demands of high school English. Occasional high school essay work (including college application essays) is available through private tutoring for returning Pinecone families.

Do you help with essays for school assignments?

Yes. Our sessions can be built around whatever essay your student has been assigned in English class, teaching them the underlying structure and revision habits so the skill transfers to the next assignment.

Is this different from the regular writing program?

Essay work is a specialized track inside the writing program. Most middle school Pinecone families move into essay-focused sessions once their student has the sentence and paragraph fundamentals from earlier grades.

What if my student needs SAT prep, not essay prep?

Our essay program focuses on the underlying writing skills that show up on the SAT and ACT. Dedicated test prep is not our specialty. Vivian can help you decide what makes sense given your student’s timeline.

Do you do college application essays?

Only occasionally, and only through private tutoring for high school students whose families have been with Pinecone since elementary school. We do not advertise this and do not take new college essay clients.

Where students get stuck with essays

Somewhere around 6th or 7th grade, writing expectations change. Sentences become paragraphs. Paragraphs become five-paragraph essays. By 8th grade, students are being asked to construct arguments with thesis statements, textual evidence, and counterarguments.

Most students hit this transition without ever having been explicitly taught how to write an essay. Elementary school teaches sentences and paragraphs. High school assumes essays. The gap between the two is where a lot of otherwise capable students fall behind. Pinecone’s essay program was built for that gap.

What we teach in the essay program

Our essay work is focused on middle school students in 6th through 8th grade, with occasional private tutoring for high school students from returning families. Core skills covered:

Analytical essays. How to build an argument from evidence. Thesis statements that actually say something. Body paragraphs that connect back to the thesis. Introductions and conclusions that do work instead of restating what came before.
Argumentative and expository essays. Textual evidence. Multi-paragraph structure without a rigid template. The moves middle school English teachers expect and high school English teachers assume.
Revision as thinking. Every essay in the Pinecone program goes through multiple revisions with an instructor sitting with the student, asking why they made the choices they made, and pushing them to defend or change those choices.

The revision problem no one talks about

Here is something a New York Times reader wrote recently that captures the entire reason Pinecone exists as a writing tutor:

Language is not merely how we express ourselves. It is one of the ways we become ourselves. We write in order to find out what we think, we revise in order to discover whether or not we believe it, and we speak, stumble, clarify, retract, and try again in order to understand the space between ideas and truth.

That is the essay-writing thesis Vivian has built the Pinecone program around. Revision is not editing. Revision is where the actual thinking happens.

Most students treat the first draft as the "real" version and then just fix typos. That is not writing. That is transcription. Real writing is when a student writes their thesis, argues it out on paper, realizes it does not actually hold up, and then rewrites the thesis so it does. That process is what makes them a stronger thinker.

Typical progression (paced to the individual)

Pinecone is ability-based, not grade-based. These bands are typical starting points; students advance as they master the material.

5th and 6th grade: Introduction to essay structure. What a thesis is. How paragraphs support a thesis. Simple five-paragraph essays on familiar topics.
7th and 8th grade: Argumentative essays. Textual evidence. Multi-paragraph structure without a rigid template. Serious revision work. Preparation for the writing demands of high school English.
High school: Available occasionally through private tutoring for returning Pinecone families. Not an advertised program and not open to new clients.

Most of our essay students live within a fifteen minute drive of the plaza. Silver Creek middle schoolers make up a big share of the caseload, along with families based in Evergreen. We also work with Santa Teresa middle school students, often online.
